Rats were shipped to Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida, on day 2 of gestation [(G2) (day 1 = morning on which spermatozoa are present in the vagina)] and laparotomized on G7 to determine the number of implantation sites in each uterine horn. On G8, ten pregnant rats meeting flight criteria (at least five implantation sites each horn) were placed into NASA flight cages (animal enclosure modules, AEMs, five rats per cage), loaded onto the mid-deck of the space shuttle Atlantis, and on G9 (3... Two pipeline (255,233) RS decoders, one a time domain decoder and the other a transform domain decoder, use the same first part to develop an errata locator polynomial .tau.(x), and an errata evaluator polynominal A(x). Both the time domain decoder and transform domain decoder have a modified GCD that uses an input multiplexer and an output demultiplexer to reduce the number of GCD cells required. The time domain decoder uses a Chien search and polynomial evaluator on the GCD outputs .tau.(x)... Topics: CHEMILUMINESCENCE, ESTERS, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, OXALIC ACID, WATER, PATENTS
THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH A THREE-DIMENSIONAL FLOW DETACHES ITSELF FROM A WALL ARE INVESTIGATED. IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE VELOCITY VECTOR NEAR THE WALL CAN BE ADEQUATELY APPROXIMATED IN THE VICINITY OF THE SEPARATION BY MEANS OF THE BEGINNING OF A TAYLOR SERIES. APPLYING THE CONTINUITY EQUATION, NAVIER-STOKES EQUATIONS, AND THE NO-SLIP CONDITION, IT IS DETERMINED THAT THE TAYLOR COEFFICIENTS UP TO SECOND ORDER TERMS, INCLUDING THE POINT OF SEPARATION, CAN BE EXPRESSED BY COMPONENTS OF THE WALL... The fluid/thermal environment in the cove between the wing and elevon surfaces was a concern throughout the design and initial operational phases of the space shuttle. Experimenal and analytical investigations provided some understanding of the environmental in the wing-elevon cove. An incompressible finite element analysis of flow through straight parallel walls and curved parallel walls to determine the effects of cove geomtry on the fluid/thermal environment is described. Results from this... Topics: ADDITIVES, VISCOSITY, WEAR, CHEMICAL PROPERTIES, ESTERS, GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY, INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY,...
The principles upon which the process of protein synthesis and the genetic code were established are elucidated. Extensive work on nuclear magnetic resonance studies of both monomermonomer and monoamino acid polynucleotide interactions is included. A new method of general utility for studying any amino acid interacting with any polynucleotide was developed. This system involves the use of methyl esters of amino acids interacting with polynucleotides. The influence of meprobamate on the vestibular illusion of counter-rotation, movement coordination and vertical writing was investigated by a double blind trial method and placebo. The results confirm the possibility of the meprobamate application for prophylaxis and correction of vestibular disturbances. THE INTENSITY RATIOS BETWEEN THE COMPONENTS OF THE SECOND PRINCIPAL-SERIES DOUBLETS OF POTASSIUM, RUBIDIUM AND CESIUM ARE MEASURED AS FUNCTIONS OF VAPOR DENSITY IN AN OXYHYDROGEN FLAME, USING A PHOTOGRAPHIC/PHOTOMETRIC METHOD. VALUES BETWEEN 1.80 AND 2.02 ARE FOUND FOR K. MERTON'S GRID METHOD OF EVALUATING PHOTOGRAPHS IS MODIFIED. LINE ABSORPTION IS MEASURED BY GOUY'S METHOD FOR THE SECOND PRINCIPAL-SERIES TERMS OF RUBIDIUM AND CESIUM TO OBTAIN INTENSITY-RATIO LIMITS. A VALUE OF 4.0 IS... The waste cooking oil (WCO) is a promising feed stock for the production of biodiesel. The waste cooking oil used in this study has very high acid value (>13 mg KOH/g), therefore a simple base transesterification utilized so far proved to be unsuitable; this process resulted in soap formation. In this study the production process of fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) from WCO involved two steps, acid catalyzed followed by base catalysis reactions. In the first step, the acid value of WCO... Topics: Waste Cooking Oil, High Acid Value, Homogenous Catalysis, Fatty Acid Methyl Esters, Fuel Properties.

In comparison with that known from later geologic time, the Archean fossil record is miniscule: although literally hundreds of Proterozoic formations, containing more that 2800 occurrences of bona fide microfossils are now known, fewer than 30 units containing some 43 categories of putative microfossils (the vast majority of which are of questionable authenticity) have been reported from the Archean. Among the oldest known fossils are Early Archean filaments reported from cherts of the Towers... Deposition and discharge of lithium on an inert (nickel) substrate was studied in an electrolyte composed of 1M LiCl04 in methyl pivalate. As with methyl acetate, cycling efficiencies were less than 10%, and the corrosion rate was greater than 200 microamps/sq cm. In methyl pivalate, the corrosion rate of the electrodeposited metal was relatively unaffected by SO2 or nitromethane, unlike methyl acetate. The similar behavior of the two pure esters implies a corrosion mechanism involving initial... Topics: DTIC Archive, Rauh, R. D., EIC CORP NEWTON MA, *LITHIUM, *CORROSION, ESTERS, REACTION KINETICS

Abstract — The rising market in biofuels has been encouraging researchers to develop new routes for biodiesel production in order to increase the yields of the process. Heterogeneous acid catalysts represent an alternative to avoid the traditional alkaline pathway for producing alkyl esters from oils with a high content of free fatty acids. In this study, sulfated - niobium oxide catalyst was developed by impregnating Nb 2 O 5 with H 2 SO 4 (0.5 mol/L) and used to carry out simultaneous... The mass redistribution in the earth as a result of an earthquake faulting changes the earth's inertia tensor, and hence its rotation. Using the complete formulae developed by Chao and Gross (1987) based on the normal mode theory, we calculated the earthquake-induced polar motion excitation for the largest 11,015 earthquakes that occurred during 1977.0-1993.6. The seismic excitations in this period are found to be two orders of magnitude below the detection threshold even with today's high... Friction and wear measurements were made on CVM M-50 steel lubricated with three C-ether (modified polyphenyl ether) formulations in dry and moist air. Results were compared to those obtained with a formulated Type 2 ester and the C-ether base fluid. A ball-on-disk sliding friction apparatus was used. Experimental conditions were a 1-kilogram load, a 17-meter/minute surface speed, and a 25 to 300 C (77 to 572 F) disk temperature range. The three C-ether formulations yielded better boundary...
